Why is Danbury called the Hat City?

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Danbury was a center of the American hat-making industry, and the nickname stuck. That history is still visible downtown. The 1903 Union Station on White Street is now the Danbury Railway Museum, with a 10-acre rail yard. The station is on the National Register of Historic Places and appears in Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train.

Danbury had 86,518 residents at the 2020 census, which makes it by far the largest city in this part of the state. It's also home to Danbury Hospital, Western Connecticut State University, Danbury Fair Mall and Danbury Municipal Airport. Many daily errands, medical appointments and jobs for people in the surrounding towns are in Danbury.
